Flavour of Faith

It is related by Abbas bin Adbul Muttalib that he heard the Apostle of
God say: "He tasted the flavour of Faith and experienced itssweetness
who agreed with a truthful heart to accept God as His Cherisher, Islam
as his religion, and Muhammad as his Prophet." [Bukhari]
Commentary:
Just as all delicious foods posses a flavour but can beperceived only
when one's faculty of taste has not been lost or become perverted due
to illness or any other cause, there is also a special sweetness in
faith which can be enjoyed by those alone who have, willingly and
earnestly, made Allah their Lord and Master, Muhammad (PBUH) their
prophet and guide, and Islam their religion and way of life, and whose
hearts have bowed in submission to God and yielded in obedience to
theprophet and assented to bethe adherents of the path of Islam. In
other words, their bond with God, the prophet and Islam is not merely
formal, hereditary or intellectual but real, sincere and genuine.
Anas related to us that "Only he will taste the sweetness of faith who
hasthese three qualities: the love of God and the prophet that comes
to him before everything else, he loves whom he loves solelyfor the
sake of God, and theidea of going back to apostasy after he has
embraced Islam is as repugnant to him as being thrown into fire."
[Bukhari and Muslim]
Commentary:
The subject matter of this tradition is almost identicalto that of
proceeding one. It says that the sweetness of faith can only be
perceived by him whose love for God and the Apostle is stronger that
for anyone or anything else in the world, so much so that when he
loves somebody, it is wholly for the sake of God, and who is so deeply
devoted to the Islamic faiththat the very idea of leaving it and
reverting back to the apostasy is as painful to him as being castinto
fire.

Anti-Islam film: US condemns Pakistan minister's bounty

The US state department has condemned a Pakistani minister's offer of
$100,000 (£61,600) for the death of the American maker of an
anti-Islam film.
It said the step was"inflammatory and inappropriate".
Railways Minister Ghulam Ahmad Bilour made the offer after a wave of
protests against the film across Pakistan and the wider Muslim world.
Dozens have died in clashes between police andprotesters in Pakistan
and countries such as Tunisia and Sudan.
Sunday saw a fresh round of protests over the film in Pakistan,
Nigeria, Greece and Turkey.
Most passed off peacefully, but in the Greek capital Athens, riot
police and demonstrators clashed. Six people were arrested.
A state department official told the BBC: "The president and secretary
of state have both said the video at the core of this is offensive,
disgusting, and reprehensible - but that is no justification for
violence, and it is important for responsible leaders to stand up and
speak out against violence.
"Therefore we find Mr Bilour's announcement is inflammatory and
inappropriate. We note that the prime minister's office has
dissociated itself from his comments."
In hiding
The exact origins of Innocence of Muslims, the low-budget film that
has prompted the unrest, are unclear.
The alleged producer of thetrailer of the film, Nakoula Basseley
Nakoula, is in hiding.
Anti-US sentiment grew after a trailer for the film dubbed into Arabic
was released on YouTube earlier this month.
US citizens have been urged not to travel to Pakistan, and the US
embassy has paid for adverts on Pakistani TV showing President Barack
Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton condemning the film.
Although US targets have borne the brunt of protestsagainst the film,
anti-Western sentiment has been stoked further by caricatures of the
Prophet Muhammad published this week in the satirical Frenchmagazine,
Charlie Hebdo.
France shut embassies and other missions in about 20 countries across
the Muslimworld on Friday.
An 18-year-old man who threatened the magazine's editors on Facebook
has been charged with terrorism-related activity following his arrest
in the southern French city of Toulon, a judicial source told AFP news
agency on Sunday.

He wants to study genetics; is there anything wrong with that in shar‘i terms?

I am a student in the faculty of sciences and I want to choose a
specialtythat will not conflict with Islam. What do you think of
specialising in genetics? Is it permissible for me to choose this
specialty?.
Praise be to Allaah.
Every branch of knowledge that people need in their religious or
worldly affairs is not forbidden in and of itself with regard to
studying, learning and understanding. But what is of concern is how
this knowledge is used and applied. There is nothing wrong with
studying accountancy – for example– but the problem is with the
practical application ofit in the real life financial world, such as
working in riba-based banks and other institutions. The same may also
be said concerning medicine. It is a branch of knowledge that is very
important and people cannot do without it, but sometimes in real life
it is used for things that are forbidden in Islam, such as cosmetic
surgery for the purpose of beautification, abortions, and so on.
The same may be said concerning the science of genetics, which is
defined in al-Mu'jam al-Waseet (2/1024) as the science which examines
the transmission of characteristics in living beings from one
generation to another andexplaining the way this occurs. It is an
important branch of knowledge, one of the greatest benefits of which
is knowledge of hereditary diseases and how to protect against them
and treat them. It may also be used for beneficial purposes in plants
and animals. But at the same time there is room for those who are
toying with what is called cloning. We have discussed a little about
what is permitted and what is forbidden with regard to cloning and
genetic engineering in the answers to questions no. 103335 and 21582 .
What matters then is not the theoretical study of genetics; rather it
is the practical application thereof. Whatever is permissible and
beneficial is encouraged by Islam, and whatever is haraam and harmful,
is forbidden by Islam.
In a conference of the Islamic Association of Medical Sciences in
Kuwait, which was held under the heading, "Genetics,
GeneticEngineering, the Human Genome and Gene Therapy: an Islamic
View," with the participation of the Islamic Fiqh Council in Jeddah,
the Local Chapter of the World Health Organization in Alexandria, and
the IslamicOrganization for Education, Science and Culture, which was
held during the period 23-25 Jumaada al-Aakhirah 1419AH/13-15 October
1998 CE,the following statement was issued:
Islam is the religion of science and knowledge, asit says in the verse
in which Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the
meaning):
"Say: 'Are those who knowequal to those who know not?'"
[al-Zumar 39:2].
Islam does not hold the human mind back from beneficial scientific
research, but it is not permissible for the results of this research
to be put into practice until they have been measured against Islamic
guidelines. Whatever is in accordance with sharee'ah is permitted, and
whatever goes against it is not permitted. The science of genetics
with its various aspects – as with all additions to knowledge – is
something that Islam encourages and Muslim scientists should be in the
forefront of it.
End quote.
And Allah knows best.

Calcium pills pose 'heart risk'

People who take calcium supplements could be increasing their risk of
having a heart attack, according to researchers in Germany.
Calcium is often taken by older people to strengthen bones and prevent
fractures.
But the study, published in the journal Heart , said the supplements
"should be taken with caution".
Experts say promoting a balanced diet including calcium would be a
better strategy.
The researchers at the German Cancer Research Centre, in Heidelberg,
followed 23,980 people formore than a decade.
They compared the number of heart attacks in people who were taking
calcium supplements with those who did not.
'Taken with caution'
We need to determine whether the potential risks of the supplements
outweigh the benefits calcium can give sufferersof conditions such as
osteoporosis"
Natasha Stewart
British Heart Foundation
There were 851 heart attacks among the 15,959 people who did not take
any supplements at all. However, people taking calcium supplements
were 86% more likely to have had a heart attack during the study.
The researchers said that heart attacks "might be substantially
increased by taking calcium supplements" and that they "should be
taken withcaution".
Dr Carrie Ruxton, from The Health Supplements Information Service
which is funded supplement manufacturers, said:"Osteoporosis is a real
issuefor women and it is irresponsible for scientists to advise that
women cut out calcium supplements on the basis of one flawed survey,
particularly when the link between calcium, vitamin D and bone health
is endorsed by the European Food Safety Authority."
The British Heart Foundation (BHF) said patients prescribed the
supplements should keep taking their medication, but should also speak
to their doctor if they were concerned.
'Not safe'
Natasha Stewart, a senior cardiac nurse with the BHF, said: "This
research indicates that there may bean increased risk of having a
heart attack for people who take calcium supplements.
"However, this does not mean that these supplements cause heart attacks.
"Further research is neededto shed light on the relationship between
calcium supplements and heart health. We need to determine whether the
potential risks of the supplements outweigh the benefits calcium can
give sufferers of conditions suchas osteoporosis."
Ian Reid and Mark Bolland, researchers at the University of Auckland
in New Zealand, said: "The evidence is also becoming steadily stronger
that it is not safe, nor is it particularly effective.
"Therefore, the administration of this micro nutrient should not be
encouraged; rather people should be advised to obtain their calcium
intake from an appropriately balanced diet.
"We should return to seeing calcium as an important component of a
balanced diet and not as a low cost panacea to the universal problem
of postmenopausal bone loss."
A spokeswoman for the UK's Department of Health said it would consider
the study carefully once the complete article had been published.
"The majority of people do not need to take a calcium supplement," she said.
"A healthy balanced diet will provide all the nutrients, including
calcium, that they need. Good sources of calcium include milk and
dairy foods, fortified dairy food alternatives, e.g. soya drink, and
green leafy vegetables."

Key Advice for the Newly Wed

بِسْمِ اللّهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيمِ‏‎ -‎
Based on the advices of Shaykh Muhammad Saleem Dhorat
prepared by Brother Aslam Patel
"You have never seen anything better than marriage for those who
love." (Ibne Mãjah)
Shaykh Muhammad Saleem Dhorat dãmat barakãtuhum advises:
1 . Every action is dependant upon intention. When marrying, both
partners should therefore make a firm intention to accomplish the
following objectives:
*. Following the Sunnah of our beloved Nabee Muhammad s.
*. Safeguarding oneself from sins.
*. Parenting pious children.
2 . When marrying, each becomes the other's lifetime companion. Each
should understand and appreciate that Allah S has brought them both
together and that their destiny in life has now become one. Whatever
thecircumstances: happiness or sorrow; health or sickness; wealth or
poverty; comfort or hardship; trial or ease; all events are to be
confronted together as a team with mutual affectionand respect. No
matter how wealthy, affluent, materially prosperous and "better-off"
another couplemay appear, one's circumstances are to be happily
accepted with qanã'at ( contentment uponthe Choice of Allah S). The
wife should happily accept her husband, his home andincome as her lot
and should always feel that herhusband is her true beloved and best
friend and well-wisher in all family decisions. The husband too should
accept his wife as his partner-for-life and not cast a glance towards
another.
3 . Nowadays, the husband reads about, and is well-informed of his
rights and demands them. Similarly, the wife reads of her rights and
expects them. However, both should concentrate on being aware of each
other's rights and then strive to fulfil them. This is the
prescription for a prosperous marriage and everlasting love.
4 . During the first year of marriage, the couple must try and spend
as much time as possible together. This is especially true for the
first two months as it provides an opportunity tounderstand each
other's temperaments and establishes a firm foundation which
contributes towards securing a prosperous marriage.
5 . The couple (especially the husband) must make a point to arrive
home early after 'Ishã Salãh and scrupulously avoid the habit of
socialising with friends late into the evening. Wherever possible,
business, employment and other activities should be concluded
beforehand or curtailed in order to set aside time for spending
together.
6 . Mutual respect between husband and wife should not be lost. They
should each be very particular about following the Deen right from the
initial stagesof married life. This will also ensure a religious
environment for the children to be nurtured in, contributing greatly
towards their successful upbringing.
7 . True and everlasting prosperity is only possible for Muslims when
they follow the Sunnah of Rasoolullah s in all affairs. The couple
too, should adhere to the teachings of Rasoolullah s in all their
matters and abstain from anything which contradictsthem. Careful
attention should be given to this in their intimate relationship too.
Inshã'allah this will be an assured approach to acquiring the blessing
of pious offspring.
8 . In the initial stages of marriage, the love between the couple is
a physical bond, wherein emotional changes take place all the time.
Despite great passion and physical love for each other, affection
between the couple is not yet well established or on a rationalbasis.
Such rational love comes after many years together. It is therefore
extremely important for the husband not to succumb to emotional
weaknesses at the onset and let the marriage wavertowards an
irreligious direction. Both the husband and wife should make a pledge
to each other to steadfastly follow the Deen, especially in the
performance of Salãh and in avoiding all sins.
9 . Marriage is like the weather, forever changing. Sometimes it is
cloudy and rainy, life appears gloomy, then the sun appears and rays
of happiness break through bringing joy. At times, one experiences
rain, wind and sunshine all in one day. Such is life, and like the
seasons, we go through different experiences. The secret is to remain
devoted and steadfast to one's Deen and spouse.
10 . The husband should besympathetic to the fact that his wife has
left her parents, brothers and sisters to start a new life with him.
Her sacrifice and her feelings should be respected and joy should be
felt by both partners at the expansion of their families.
Just as the wife should treat her husband's parentsas her own, he
should also extend affection, courtesy and respect to his new in-laws.

The Bond of Holy Love

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "The noblest of you are those who
are the noblest to their families…"
"Verily, among the most perfect Believers in Iman are those who are
best in character and kindest to their wives."
Even lifting a morsel of food to the mouth of the wife has been given
the significance of ibadat. It is an act of love by which the husband
derives thawab (reward in the Hereafter).
It was part of the Uswah Hasanah (Noble character) of the Prophet صلى
الله عليه وسلم to engage in light hearted talk with his wives.Hadhrat
Abu Hurairah رضى الله تعالى عنه said:
Allah loves a man who caresses his wife. Both of them are awarded
thawab because of this loving attitude and their rizq (earning) is
increased."
A man is rewarded for evena drink of water he presents to his wife.
According to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم the mercy of Allah Ta'ala
cascades on a couple when the husband glances at his wifewith love and
pleasure andshe returns his glance with love and pleasure.
When a husband clasps thehand of his wife with love their sins fall
from the gapsbetween their clasped fingers. Even mutual love between
husband and wives serve as a kaffara (expiation) for sins. The Prophet
صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
"When a man enters his home cheerfully, Allah creates, as a result of
his happy attitude, an angel who engages in istighfar (prayers of
forgiveness) on behalf of the man until the day of Qiyamah."
May Allah give us the ability to act upon the above, ameen.
Al-Mar'atus Salihah (The Pious Wife) is also published by Mujlisul
Ulama, both books can be found in the English language and have been
described as the islamic prescription for a happy and successful
marriage , the blessings and rewards of which extend into even the
Hereafter.

Wake Up!

Bismillah Al Rahman, Al Raheem:
"Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar" you hear the athaango on.
But you still decide to procrastinate, even when your family yells, "Come on!"
You think, "I still have time, before I really have to pray,'Asr is
still hours away."
Your head is saying "Go" but the Shaytaan is saying "No" so you go on anyway.
You go to your bed and decide to lie down, for just a few minutes you say.
But when your head hits the pillow, your body is overcome by a
feeling, different than any other way.
You suddenly feel hot and nervous, and your throat is parched and dry.
You hear a voice call, "Why did you disobey me?" But you are unable to
answer why.
Suddenly your life flashes before your eyes,
And feelings of guilt and regret are becoming hard to disguise.
Images and thoughts run through your head,
If only you did more useful things, but you wasted your time instead.
Every ill word you said, andevery prayer you missed is presented,
If only you took life more seriously…if only you repented.
You say, "I didn't know anybetter, I never knew to take a closer look"
But the voice replies, "Yes you did, you had The Holy Book."
"In it you will find the meaning of life, and words of inspiration.
And the perfect example for mankind, the Prophet who received the revelation."
"This life is but a stage, a mere drop compared to an ocean,
"So think not of the worldly things, and make sure that in your heart
lies devotion."
You wake up suddenly, alarmed and quivering.
"I wasted so much time!" you think, "good words and prayers I should
be delivering."
You pray, and then afterwards do some reflection,
And you decide to give your life a thorough inspection.
This life is so unpredictable;it can vanish very soon,
All that you see will perish, and only your deeds will remain with you.
So hold on to the Quran and the way of the Prophet(saw) for salvation,
And do not delay what you must do, remember Jannah, the ultimate destination.

Mum and Dad

Teaching me to refrain from sinning
Showing me right from wrong
Tarbiyyah provided all along
Saving me from doing misdeeds
Guiding me to increase good deeds
Instilling in me the desire to seek Allahs pleasure
Mum and Dad , what you did for me I cannot measure.
Oh, Allah , Look after my parents as they looked after me*
My Lord, make Jannah for them Your decree.
Ameen
*My Lord! Have mercy on them as they did care for me when I was
little. (Quran, Al-Isra' v. 24)
Waathilah (Allah be pleased with him) reportedthat the Prophet (صلى
الله عليه وسلم) said: "Four [types of people's] du'a are accepted: The
just leader, aman who prays for his absent brother, the prayer of the
oppressed person and the one who prays for his parents."

The Wisdom of the Prophet: the Incident of the Epileptic Woman

There is a hadith narrated by 'Ata bin Abi Rabah:
Ibn 'Abbas once said to me,"Shall I show you a womanof the people of Paradise?"
I said, "Yes."
He said, "This black lady came to the Prophet (peacebe upon him) and
said, 'I get attacks of epilepsy and my body becomes uncovered; please
invoke Allah for me.' The Prophet said (to her), 'If you wish, be
patient and you will have Paradise; and if you wish, I will invoke
Allah to cure you.' She said, 'I will remain patient,' and added, 'but
I become uncovered, so please invoke Allah for me that I may not
become uncovered.' So he invoked Allah for her." - Bukhari :: Book 7
:: Volume 70 :: Hadith 555
This hadith was published recently on MuslimasOasis.com , and I was
fascinated by the many comments from readers who have epilepsy and
have been inspired or comforted by this hadith.
One sister wrote:
"(This hadith) was a comfort to me as an epileptic when I had a
seizure outside of a masjid on the pavement in Philadephia during a
busy Jumaah afternoon. When I came to, my niqab was removed, my hijab
loosened, and my husband and a brother were helpingthe paramedics that
had arrived. Because of this hadith I felt comfort in spite of being
such a spectacle, alhamdulillah."
Another said:
"I too am an epileptic. When I first reverted to Islam over 3 years
ago, oneof the sisters who witnessed my Shahada wrote this hadith out
and gave it to me. It is a HUGE comfort to know this. May Allah ease
the trials of all epileptics and those who suffer from any disease
andgrant us all sabr. Ameen!"
And there were other similar comments, from men and women, ma-sha-Allah.
I don't have epilepsy or any other serious sickeness,Alhamdulillah
(praise God) for all His blessings. But as Iread the comments of
people who do have some illness and have been tremendously comforted
by this hadith, all of a sudden I realized the huge wisdom of the
Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) in whathe said to the epileptic woman. He
could have simply invoked for her and she would have been cured, and
then all of us 1,400 years later would read the story and say,
"Ma-sha-Allah, another miracle to prove his Prophethood." But it
wouldhave no lasting personal significance.
Instead, by asking the woman to be patient and promising her Jannah
(Paradise), the Prophet (pbuh) has sent a message of hope down through
the ages to all the other sufferers in the world: Allah sees your
suffering. Your pain will be compensated, and your patience rewarded
with the greatest possible prize.
Even today epilepsy cannotbe cured, though it can be controlled
somewhat through medication. So even now, all these years later, in
this age of medical wonders, this hadith still has immediate
significance for people who suffer from this illness, and in fact
frompeople who suffer from any illness, from cancer to leprosy to
bipolar disorder.
Another point of note is that every Prophet was sent with certain
types of miracles appropriate to theunderstanding of their people.
Musa (Moses, peacebe upon him) was sent with the staff of power andthe
white hand, because his mission was to a peoplesteeped in sorcery.
"Medicalmiracles" – curing the sick, even bringing the dead back to
life – were the hallmark of the Prophet Isaibn Maryam (Jesus son of
Mary, pbuh), because he was sent to a people who specialized in
healing arts.
If the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) had made it his habit to cure the sick,
the Christians might say about us Muslims, "Oh, you are only taking
Biblical stories and applying them to your Prophet."
Instead, though the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) performed his shareof
wonders, he was given the greatest miracle of all, the Quran, a living
proof through the millenia, and asource of eternal guidance. This is
appropriate becausehis immediate mission wasto a people of poetry, of
language and eloquence; while his greater mission was to all of
humanity.
"Say: 'If the whole of mankind and Jinns were to gather together to
produce the like of this Qur'an, they could not produce the like of
it, even if they backed up each other with help and support.'" (Quran
17:88)
Did the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), a mereshepherd and trader living
almost one and a half thousand years ago in the lonely deserts of
Arabia, realize the lasting significance of his actions? Did he
perceive the way hiswords and deeds would echo down the annals of
history?
Sure he did. He was a man of great wisdom, courage and natural
intelligence. Hedid not do things randomly, especially in matters of
worship. And hewas guided by Allah in these matters, so that his
actions could serve as an example for humanity untilthe Day of
Resurrection./

Are the angels superior or the Prophet and the righteous?

Do the angels worship Allah better and more perfectly than the
Prophets themselves?.
Praise be to Allaah.
The angels are honoured slaves and do not disobey Allah in what He
commands them to do; they do whatever they arecommanded. Allah
createdthem and made their innate nature one of obedience and worship
of Him. Some of them are appointed in charge of therevelation, some
are appointed in charge of provision, some are appointed in charge of
themountains and some are created to worship, pray, and glorify and
remember Allah.
At-Tirmidhi (2312) narrated, in a report whichhe classed as hasan,
that Abu Dharr said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of
Allah be upon him) said: "Verily I see what you do not see and I hear
what you do not hear. The heaven is creaking and it should creak, for
there is no space in it the width of four fingers but there is anangel
there, placing his forehead in prostration to Allah."
Classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh at-Tirmidhi
In the hadeeth of the Isra' (Prophet's Night Journey) it says: "Then
the Much-Frequented House (al-bayt al-ma'moor) was raised up for me,
and I asked Jibreel (about it). He said: 'This is the Much-Frequented
House. Every day seventy thousand angels enter it and when they depart
from it, they never return to it.'"
Narrated by al-Bukhaari (3207) and Muslim (164).
At-Tabari narrated in his Tafseer (21/127) from Ibn Mas'ood (may Allah
be pleased with him) that he said: Among the heavens is one in which
there is no space the size of a handspan but on it there is the
forehead of an angelor his foot standing there. Then he recited the
words:"Verily, we (angels), we stand in rows for the prayers (as you
Muslims stand in rows for your prayers). Verily, we (angels), we are
they who glorify (Allah's Praises i.e. perform prayers)" [as-Saffaat
37:165-166].
Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in as-Saheehah, 1059
Such worship is beyond the capabilities of any human being, and they
are not able to do it. The angels do not slow down or become tired, as
Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning):
"But if they are too proud (to do so), then there are those who are
with your Lord (angels) glorify Him night and day, and never are they
tired"
[Fussilat 41:38].
What is instilled in human beings is human nature, including the
Prophets and Messengers of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon
them); they are different from the angels in their attributes and
natures.
The angels are able to do feats of worship that no human is able to do.
But the fact that their worship is greater does not mean that they are
superior to the Prophets; the Prophets are to be viewed on the basis
that they are human beings with human nature. It is because they have
risen tosuch a high status in obedience to their Lord that they have a
particularvirtue and sublime position, so much so that more than one
of the scholars has said that the righteous among mankindare of a
higher status thanthe angels, because the angels do not have any
inclination towards evil or disobedience, whereas therighteous among
mankindhave these inclinations, but they resist them and overcome them
in order to obey Allah.
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah was asked about those who obey Allah
among the ummah of Muhammad (blessings and peace of Allah be upon
him): are they superior to the angels?
He replied:
It was proven that 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr said: The angels said: O Allah,
You have created the sons of Adam, and they eat anddrink and enjoy
life in the world; create for us the Hereafter as you created the
world for them. He said: I shall not do that. They asked Him again and
He said: I shall not do that. Then they asked Him again two or three
times and He said: By My Glory, I cannot regard the righteous among
the descendants of the one whom I have created withMy own hand as
being likeone to whom I said: Be! And he was (i.e., the angels). This
was narrated by 'Uthmaan ibn Sa'eed ad-Daarimi.
It was narrated from 'Abdullah ibn Salaam that he said: Allah has not
created any creation dearer to Him that Muhammad. It was said tohim:
Not even Jibreel and Mika'eel? He said to the one who asked him: Do
you know what Jibreel and Mika'eel are? Jibreel and Mika'eel are
subjugated creations like the sun and the moon. Allah has not created
anyone who is dearer to him than Muhammad (blessings and peace of
Allah be upon him)....

7a. Is it permissible to have a favourite soorah of theQur’aan that one recites and listens to a great deal because it has an impact on the heart?

7a.
It was proven from the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon
him) that "Soorat al-Ikhlaas is equivalent to one third of the
Qur'aan." If this questioner loves to recite Soorah Maryam because of
what it contains of great and beneficial stories, and what it contains
of mention of the recompense of the Last Day, and denunciation of the
one who disbelieves and rejects the signs of Allah, and other
meanings, there is nothing wrong with that at all.
End quote from Fataawa Islamiyyah, 4/50
The point is that some parts of the Qur'aan may have a greater impact
on the heart, instilling fear or hope, than other verses or soorahs.
If the reader benefits from reciting that and has the habit of doingso
time after time, there isnothing wrong with it.
Rather what is not allowed is to think that a particular soorah or
verse has some spiritual virtue, or that the one who reads it will
have such and such reward, without that being based on any text ofthe
revelation.
Shaykh Bakr Abu Zayd (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
It is an innovation (bid'ah) to single out without any evidence, a
particular verse or soorah to be recited at a particular timeor in a
particular place or for a particular need./

7. Is it permissible to have a favourite soorah of theQur’aan that one recites and listens to a great deal because it has an impact on the heart?

7.
My question is whether it is okay for a person to have a favourite
surah that they like to read/listen to and think about all the time?
From ayoung age I have always loved Surah Al-Waqiah. I try to read the
Quran as much as I can on a daily basis but am always drawn to Surah
Al-Waqiah.It brings about all sorts of wonderful emotions such as
love, hope and gratitude, but also extreme fear and terror of ending
up in the fire. Whenever I am faced witha problem/stressful situation,
the verses just automatically pop into myhead and make me feel better.
But I sometimes feel that maybe I am doing wrong by focusing on it and
loving it more than other surahs.
Praise be to Allaah.
There is nothing wrong with a Muslim singling outa soorah from the
Book of Allah for extra attention, whether that is reciting it or
listening to it or learning about its meanings and the like, and
learning about what itcontains of rulings, exhortation, warnings andso
on, without that leading to neglect of the rest of the Qur'aan and
neglecting to recite it, so long as that is based on some special
reasons such as trying to develop a deeper understanding of the soorah
or because onefeels moved by its contents and the like. It should not
be based on a belief in a particular virtueof that soorah for which
there is no proof in sharee'ah.
In a hadeeth that was narrated and classed as hasan by at-Tirmidhi
(3297), it says that the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon
him) said: "Hood, al-Waaqi'ah, al-Mursalaat, 'Amma yatsaa'iloon
[al-Naba'] and Idha ash-'shamsu kuwwirat [al-Takweer] have made my
hair turn grey."
Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh at-Tirmidhi.
An-Nasaa'i (1010) narratedthat Abu Dharr said: The Prophet (blessings
and peace of Allah be upon him) prayed qiyaam all night, repeating the
verse (interpretation of the meaning): "If You punish them, they are
Your slaves, and if You forgive them, verily You, only You are the
All-Mighty, the All-Wise" [al-Maa'idah 5:118].
Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh an-Nasaa'i
Abu Nu'aym narrated in al-Hilyah (2/55) with a saheeh isnaad that
'Urwahibn az-Zubayr said: I entered upon Asma' bint Abi Bakr when she
was praying and I heard her reciting this verse (interpretation of the
meaning): "But Allah has been gracious to us, and has saved us from
the torment of the Fire" [at-Toor 52:27], then she started seeking
refuge with Allah (and continued to do so). I got up to leavewhen she
was still seekingrefuge with Allah, and I went to the marketplace. And
when I came back, she was still weeping and seeking refuge with Allah.
Ibn Sa'd narrated in at-Tabaqaat (7/150) from Bahz ibn Hakeem that
Zaraarah ibn Awfa led them in praying Fajr in themosque of Banu
Qushayr, and he recited until he reached the words (interpretation of
the meaning), "Then, when the Trumpet is sounded (i.e. its second
blowing); Truly, that Day will be a Hard Day. Far from easy for the
disbelievers" [al-Muddaththir 74:8-10], whereupon he fell down dead.
Bahz said: I was one of those who carried him.
Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked:
What is the ruling on preferring one soorah to another, especially
since I love to recite Soorah Maryam sometimes, for example, because I
feel comfort and joy when I recite it?
He replied: There is nothing wrong with a person preferring one soorah
of the Qur'aan overanother for some reason. All of it is the word of
Allah, may He be glorified and exalted. With regard to the One Who
spoke its words, namely Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, there
is no differentiation. But with regard to what it includes of great
meanings, there may be some differentiation.
Hence it is proven from the Prophet (blessings andpeace of Allah be
upon him) that "The greatest soorah of the Book of Allah is Soorat
al-Faatihah and the greatest verse in the Book of Allah is Aayat
al-Kurisy."
The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) sent one of the
Sahaabah on an expedition, and he used torecite Qur'aan for his
companions and end with Soorat al-Ikhlaas. The Prophet (blessings and
peace of Allah be upon him) said: "Ask him why he does that?" He said:
Because it is a description of the Most Merciful and I love to recite
it. The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: "Tell
him that Allah loves him."

6. Beliefs of the Bareilawis (or Barelvis)

6.
What are the beliefs of theBareilawi (or Barelvi) sect?.
Praise be to Allaah.
The Bareilawis are an extreme Sufi sect that appeared in the
Indo-Pakistani subcontinent, in the city ofBareilly, in the Indian
stateof Uttar Pradesh during the days of British colonialism.
The basic principles of their misguided, deviant teachings are based
on exaggeration about the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be
upon him) and the members of his household, exaggeration about the
righteous, enmity towardsAhl as-Sunnah, and diverting the people
awayfrom jihad for the sake of Allah.
The founder of this sect was called Ahmad Reza Khan Taqiy 'Ali Khan;
he called himself 'Abd al-Mustafa.
He was one of the misguided extremists. He used to say: "When you are
confused, seek help from the occupants of the graves."
In his extreme exaggeration about the Messenger (blessings and peace
of Allah be upon him), he said: "The Messenger of Allah (blessings and
peace of Allah be upon him) is in control everywhere; he is the king
of earth and the sovereign of mankind."
And he said: "O Muhammad, I cannot say that you are Allah and I cannot
differentiate between you and Him; your matter is for Him to judge,
for He knows best what you really are."
And he said: "Allah, may He be blessed and exalted, gave the one who
broughtthe Qur'an, our master Muhammad (blessings andpeace of Allah be
upon him), everything that is in al-Lawh al-Mahfooz."
And he said: "The Messenger (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him)
is light from the Lightof Allah, and all of creationcomes from his
light."
Amjad 'Ali, one of their leaders, said: "The Prophet(blessings and
peace of Allah be upon him) is a deputy of Allah with complete
authority, and the entire universe is under his control. So he does
whatever he wants, he gives whatever he wants to whoever he wants, he
takes whatever he wants, and there is no one in the universe who can
alter his rule. He is the master of humans and whoever does not make
him his sovereign is deprived of the sweetness of the sunnah."
And he said: "Those who reject seeking help from the Prophets and
saints and from their graves are heretics."
Ahmad Yar Khan – one of their shaykhs – said: "The shar'i meaning of
the one who is present and watching [this refers to the Prophet
(blessings andpeace of Allah be upon him] is that the one who
ispossessed of holy power isable to see the world like the palm of his
hand from the place where he is; he can hear sounds from nearand from
far; he can go around the world in a single moment; he helps those who
are in need andhe answers those who callon him."
They used to build structures over graves andfrequent them, lighting
candles and lamps in them, offer sacrifices to them in fulfilment of
vows, seeking barakah (blessing) from them, holding celebrations for
them, putting flowers and roses and cloths on them and putting
curtains around them, and calling their followers to circumambulate
the tombs, seeking barakah from them.
See: al-Kashf 'an Haqeeqat as-Sufiyyah (1/350); as-Sufiyah: Nash'atuha
wa Tatawwuruha (p. 62); al-Mawsoo'ah al-Muyassarah fi'l-Adyaan
wa'l-Madhaahib wa'l-Ahzaab al-Mu'aasirah (p. 302-306).
See also the answer to question no. 1487
The scholars of the Standing Committee for Issuing Fatwas were asked:
There is a certain group in Pakistan that is called the Bareilawis or
the Nawaari group, named after their current leader who is known as
Nawaari. I askedyou for the shar'i ruling concerning them and
theirbeliefs, and praying behind them, so that this may bring peace of
mind to many people who do not know the truth about them. And once
again, I would like to ask you about some of their mythsand widespread
beliefs:
1. The belief that the Messenger (blessings and peace of Allah be
upon him) is alive
2. The belief that the Messenger (blessings and peace of Allah be
upon him) is present and can see what is happening, especially
immediately after Jumu'ah prayer.
3. The belief that the Messenger (blessings and peace of Allah be
upon him) will definitely intercede for them.
4. They believe in the awliya' ("saints") and the occupants of
graves, and they pray at their graves and ask them to meet their
needs.
5. They build domes over graves and put lights in them.
6. They are known to say "Ya Rasool, Ya Muhammad (O Messenger, O
Muhammad) (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him).
7. They get angry with the one who says Ameen out loud and raises
his hands when praying, and they regard him as a Wahhaabi.
8. They find it very strange when the siwaak is used at the time
of prayer.:->

5a. Ruling on what is known as “khatam shifa”, and praying behind an innovator andcalling him (to the right path)

5a.
The view of ash-Shaafa'i and Abu Haneefah is that his prayeris valid;
however in the madhhabs of Maalik and Ahmad there is a dispute
concerning this issue and it is subject to further discussion.
However this only applies to bid'ah that is known to be contrary to
the Qur'an and Sunnah, such as the innovations of the Raafidis,
Jahamis and so on. People argue about many issue of religion in this
country, and both parties to an argument may innovators, and both of
them may be ignorant and misinterpreting things, so the refusal of one
of them to pray behind the other is not better than if it is the other
way round. But oncethe Sunnah is established and becomes known, and
one person or group goes against it, this is the matter concerning
which there is a difference of scholarly opinion. And Allah knows
best. End quote.
In Fataawa al-Lajnah ad-Daa'imah (7/364) thereis the following question:
Is it permissible to pray behind an imam who is aninnovator?
The committee replied:
Whoever can find an imam who is not an innovator should pray behind
him and not behind the innovator. Whoever cannot find anyone except
this innovator should advise him in the hope that he will give up his
innovation. If he does not accept that advice, and his innovation
involves shirk, such as those who seek the help of the dead or
callupon them instead of Allah, or offer sacrifices to them, then he
(the one who offered advice) should not pray behind him because he is
a kaafir and his prayer is invalid, and it is not right to appoint him
as an imam. Ifhis innovation does not make him a kaafir, such as
uttering the intention out loud, his prayer is valid as is the prayer
of those who pray behind him. End quote.
With regard to calling these people (da'wah) andadvising them, seek
the help of Allah first and foremost, make your intention sincere and
intend to guide them to the right path, and Allah will help you in
that.
You should explain to them that they are going against the teachings
of Islam, with evidence and proof, and demonstrate that the specious
argument they follow is wrong; you should also refer to scholars
concerning issues that youare uncertain about, so that their specious
arguments will not affect you and they will not defeat you in
argument, lest the ignorant think that their view is correct. And you
should pay attention to being kind and gentle in all of that.
And Allah knows best.

5. Ruling on what is known as “khatam shifa”, and praying behind an innovator andcalling him (to the right path)

5.
My bother just had an operation and his situation is critical. So,
what my mom decided to do is perform khatam shifa which is basically
saying ya salaamu 12500 times, reading some dua, reading Surah Yaseen
and Surah Ar-Rahman 40 timeseach, feeding the poor andgiving away
goats. Is is something from our Rasul Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam.
Another question is regarding the mosques in Bangladesh. They do a lot
of bidah that includes asking wasillah, teaching acts mentioned above,
celebrate milad in nabi and I can keep going on for ages. Is it
permissible to pray behind those imams who teaches such things?
Sometimes, when I try to talk to them, whether they get angry and they
do not reason and give sahih daleel to their arguments. They always
say that some alims taught them and they are better than us and we
should follow them without question. We are facing this diellma to
either be quiet and allow them to follow what they will.
Sometimes it ends in quarrel and at times ruins
relationships/friendship.... because as much as we trythey always say
that the alim is far better and knows what he is preaching.
Finally, what should I do to explain my family and friends?.
Praise be to Allaah.
Firstly:
With regard to what is called "khatam shifa", it is an innovation
(bid'ah). TheProphet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said:
"The worst of matters are those which are newly invented (in
religion). Every newly invented matter is an innovation, every
innovation is a going astray, and every going astray is in the Fire."
With regard to these soorahs and adhkaar (dhikrs) that are mentioned
in the question, this is somethingfor which there is no evidence
(daleel), and it is not permissible to do these things for which there
is no evidence in theBook of our Lord or the Sunnah of our Prophet
(blessings and peace of Allah be upon him).
What is prescribed in our religion is to offer supplication (du'aa')
for the sick person and to ask Allah to heal him and purify him. That
will have the greatest impact in taking away the disease and bringing
about rapid healing. It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbaas (may Allah be
pleased with him)that the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be
upon him) said: "Whoever visits a sick person whose time (of death)
has not yet come, and says to him seven times 'As'al Allah al-'Azeem
Rabb al-'Arsh al-'Azeem an yashfeeyaka (I ask Allah the Almighty, Lord
of the Mighty Throne,to heal you)', Allah will heal him of that
sickness."
Narrated by Ahmad (2137), Abu Dawood (3106) and at-Tirmidhi (2083);
classed as saheeh by al-Albaani.
So you should offer supplication (du'aa') for him in the wording
mentioned in this hadeethand other saheeh hadeeths.
The same applies to givingcharity. There is no doubt that spending for
the sake of Allah is something that brings good. It was narrated from
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that theProphet
(blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: "There is no dayon
which people wake up, but two angels come down and one of them says:
'O Allaah, give more to the one who spends,' and the other says, 'O
Allaah, send destruction upon the one who withholds.'"
Narrated by al-Bukhaari (1442) and Muslim (1010).
So spend and give charity, and be optimistic about compensation from
Allah, may He be glorified.
Secondly:
With regard to praying behind an innovator, Shaykh al-Islam [Ibn
Taymiyah] said in Majmoo'al-Fataawa (23/355):
With regard to praying behind an innovator, this is a matter
concerning which there is a difference of opinion and it is subjectto
further discussion. If you cannot find any other imam apart from him,
such as in the case of Jumu'ah prayer which is only held in one place,
or Eid prayer, or prayers during Hajj behind the imam who is in charge
of Hajj, these prayers are to be offered behind anyone, whether he is
righteous orotherwise, according to the consensus of Ahl as-Sunnah
wa'l-Jamaa'ah. Rather the ones who refrain from offering theseprayers
behind the imams are the followers of innovations such as the Raafidis
and others like them, who do not attend any Jumu'ah prayer or prayer
in congregation. If there is only one mosque in the village, then
prayingin congregation behind animmoral person is better than praying
on one's ownat home, lest that lead to giving up prayer in
congregation altogether. But if it is possible to pray behind someone
other than the innovator, that is undoubtedly better and preferable.
But if he prays behind him, there is a scholarly difference of opinion
concerning his prayer.

Is faith in the heart sufficient for a person to be a Muslim?

Is faith in the heart sufficient for a person to be a Muslim, without
praying, fasting or paying zakaah?.
Praise be to Allaah.
Faith in the heart is not sufficient without prayer etc. Rather it is
obligatory to believe in one's heart that Allah is One, with no
partner or associate, and that He is one's Lord and Creator, and to
devote worship to Him alone, may He be glorified and exalted. And it
is obligatory to believe in the Messenger Muhammad(blessings and peace
of Allah be upon him) and that he is truly the Messenger of Allah to
all ofthe two races (mankind and the jinn). All of this is essential,
for it is the foundation of the faith. It is also obligatory for the
accountable individual to believe in everything that Allah and His
Messenger have told us about Paradise and Hell, the Siraat (bridge
over Hell), the Balance and other things referred to in the Holy
Qur'aan and saheeh Sunnah. In addition to that, it is essential to
utter the declaration of faith (shahaadah), testifying that there is
no God but Allah and that Muhammadis the Messenger of Allah, and it is
essential to pray and to do all the other things enjoined in Islam.
Ifthe individual prays, then he has done what he is obliged to do, but
if he does not pray then he has committed an act of kufr (disbelief),
because not praying is kufr.
With regard to zakaah, fasting, Hajj and all the other obligatory
matters, if he believes that they areobligatory but he is too lazy to
do them, then he isnot a kaafir because of that; rather he is
disobedient or sinning, and his faith is weak and lacking, because
faith may increase and decrease. Faith increases when one does acts of
worship and righteous deeds, and it decreases when one commits acts of
disobedience and sin, according to Ahl as-Sunnah wa'l-Jamaa'ah.
With regard to prayer in particular, not praying is kufr according to
many scholars, even if one does not deny that it is obligatory. This
is the more correct of the two scholarly opinions. This is in contrast
to other acts ofworship such as zakaah, fasting, Hajj and so on. If he
does not do them, that is not major kufr accordingto the correct
opinion, but it detracts from and weakens faith, and it is a serious
major sin. Not giving zakaah is a serious major sin; not fasting is a
serious major sin; not performing Hajj when one is able to do so is a
seriousmajor sin – but it is not major kufr if one believes that
zakaah is a duty, fasting is a duty, Hajj is a duty for the one who is
able to do it. So long as one does not deny that these duties are
obligatory, but he is negligent concerning them, then he is not a
kaafir according to the correct opinion.
With regard to prayer, if he does not do it, then according to the
more correct scholarly opinion he is a kaafir in the sense of major
kufr –Allah forbid– even if he does not denythat it is obligatory, as
stated above. That is because the Prophet (blessings and peace of
Allah be upon him) said: "Between a man and shirkand kufr there stands
his giving up prayer." Narrated by Muslim in his Saheeh. And he
(blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: "The covenant that
differentiates between us and them is prayer; whoever does not pray is
a kaafir." Narrated by Imam Ahmad and the authors of the four
Sunanswith a saheeh isnaad. This applies equally to both men and
women. We ask Allah to keep us safe and sound.

4a. The Earth: A Living Planet

4a.
There are many other balances established on earth for the continuity of life:
For instance, if the surface gravity were stronger than its current
value, the atmosphere would retain too much ammonia and methane
gasses, which would mean the end of life.If it were weaker, the
planet's atmosphere wouldlose too much water, and life on earth would
be impossible.
The thickness of the earth'scrust constitutes another one of the
delicate balances in the earth. If theearth's crust were thicker, too
much oxygen would betransferred from the atmosphere to the crust and
this would have severeeffects on human life.
If the opposite were true, that is, if the earth's crust were thinner,
volcanic and tectonic activity would be too great to permit life on
earth.
Another crucial balance for human life is the ozone level in the
atmosphere. If it were greater than its current value, the surface
temperatures would be toolow. If it were less, surface temperatures
would be toohigh, and there would be too much ultraviolet radiation at
the surface.
In fact, the absence of evena single of these balances would set the
end to life on earth. However, God hascreated the universe with
infinite wisdom and powerand designed the earth specially for human
life. Despite this fact, the majority of people lead their lives in
total ignorance of these events. In the Qur'an, God reminds people of
His blessings in the 13th verse of Surat al-Fatir:
"(God) makes night merge into day and day merge into night, and He has
made the sun and moon subservient, each one running until a specified
time. That is God, your Lord. The Kingdom is His. Those you call on
besides Him have no power over even the smallest speck." [Al-Fatir
35:13]
It is sufficient look at millions of dead planets in space in order to
understand that the delicate balances required for life on earth is
not a result of random coincidences. The conditions essential for life
are too complicated to have been formed "on their own" and at random,
and these conditions are specially created for life alone.
These balances we have briefly described so far are only a few of the
millions of intricate, interrelated balances and orders established so
that people can live in peace and safetyon the earth.
God has created the universe with infinitewisdom and power and
designed the earth specially for human life.
Examining only a part of the balances and harmony on the earth is
enough to comprehend the superior being of God and grasp theexistence
of a planned creation in every detail of the universe. It is no doubt
impossible for a person or any other living being to build such an
enormous balance and order. Nor are the components of this order such
as atoms, elements, molecules, and gasses capable of establishing an
order basedon such intricate and extremely delicate calculations and
measurements, and such fine tunings. This is because activities like
planning, ordering, arranging, calculating, and proportioning can only
be realized by beings that possess wisdom, knowledge and power.
TheExalted Being Who orders, plans and balances the entire universe to
be fit for life of human beings on a planet like earth and Who
sustains it with dramatically delicate measures and balances is God,
Who has Infinite Wisdom, Knowledge and Power.
In the Qur'an, it is stated that those people who are able to realize
these facts are only "people with intelligence":
"In the creation of the heavens and the earth, andthe alternation of
night and day, there are Signs forpeople with intelligence: those who
remember God, standing, sitting and lying on their sides, and reflect
on the creation of the heavens and the earth: 'OurLord, You have not
created this for nothing. Glory be toYou! So safeguard us from the
punishment of the Fire." [Al-i-'Imran 3:190-191]/

4. The Earth: A Living Planet

4.
The earth is a living planet where many complex systems run perfectly
without stopping at all. When compared to other planets, it is evident
that inall its aspects the earth is specially designed for human life.
Built on delicate balances, life prevails in every spot of this
planet, from the atmosphere to the depths of the earth.
Exploring only a few of the millions of these delicate balances would
be sufficient to show that the world we live in is speciallydesigned
for us.
One of the most important balances in our planet is revealed in the
atmospherethat surrounds us. The atmosphere of the earth holds the
most appropriategasses in the most appropriate ratio needed for the
survival not only of human beings, but also of all the living beings
on the earth.
The 77% of nitrogen, 21% of oxygen and 1% of carbon dioxide as well as
other gasses readily available in the atmosphere represent the ideal
figures necessary for the survival of living beings. Oxygen, a gas
that is vital for living beings, helps food to be burned and converted
into energy in our bodies.
If the oxygen percentage inthe atmosphere were greater than 21%, the
cells in our body would soon start to suffer great damages. The
vegetation and hydrocarbon molecules needed for life would also be
destroyed. Ifthis percentage were any less, this would cause
difficulties in our respiration, and the food we eat would not be
converted into energy. Therefore, the 21% of oxygen in the atmosphere
is the most ideal quantity determined for life.
The conditions essential for life are too complicated to have been
formed"on their own"
No less than oxygen, other gasses like nitrogen and carbon dioxide are
also arranged in the ideal quantity for the needs of living beings and
the continuity of life. The amount of nitrogen in the atmosphere has
the ideal ratio to balance the harmful and burning effects of oxygen.
This ratiorepresents the most appropriate value required for
photosynthesis, which is essential for life's energy supply on the
earth. Moreover, the amount of carbon dioxide has the most appropriate
value that is needed to maintain the stability of the surface
temperature of the earth and to prevent heat loss especially at night
time. This gas, comprising 1% of the atmosphere, covers theearth like
a quilt and prevents the loss of heat tospace. If this amount were
greater, the temperature ofthe earth would increase excessively,
causing climatic instability and posing a serious threat against
living beings.
These proportions remain constant, thanks to a perfect system. The
vegetation covering the earth converts carbon dioxide to oxygen,
producing 190 billion tons of oxygen every day. The proportion of
other gasses is always kept constant on the earth by the help of
interconnected complex systems. Life is thus sustained.
In addition to the establishment of the ideal gas mixture required for
life on the earth, the mechanisms needed to preserve and maintain this
order are created alongsidewith it. Any break in the balance, though
instantaneous, or any change in the ratios even for a very short time
period, would mean the total destruction of life. Yet, this does not
happen. The formation of these gasses in the atmosphere just in the
amount people need, and the constant preservation of these
ratiosindicate a planned creation.
At the same time, the earthhas the ideal size in terms of magnitude to
possess anatmosphere. If the mass of the earth were a little less,
then its gravitational force would be insufficient and the atmosphere
would be dispersed in space. If its mass were a little greater, then
the gravitational forcewould be too much and the earth would absorb
all gasses in the atmosphere. There is an incredibly high number of
conditions required for the formation of an atmosphere such as the one
our world currently has and all of these conditions should exist
altogether to be able to talk of life.
The creation of these delicate proportions and balances in the sky is
mentioned in the 7th verseof Surat ar-Rahman:
"He erected heaven and established the balance." [Ar-Rahman 55:7]
The majority of people spend their lives without being aware of the
delicatebalances and subtle adjustments in the gas composition of the
atmosphere, the distance of the world to the sun or the movements of
planets. They are ignorant of the great significance of these balances
and adjustments to their own lives. However, even a minor deviation in
any one of these arrangements would create very severe problems
regarding the existence and survival of humankind.

In Hellfire will I burn
Or receive the Jannah that Iyearn

3. THE PROPHETS' HOPEFUL CHARACTERS

3.
As with everything else, the prophets are the bestexemplars of
trusting in Allah and remaining hopeful when faced with any
difficulty. They took only Allah as their friend, were sincerely bound
to His laws, and lived entirely for Him. At every instant of their
lives, theytrusted in and depended upon Him, for they knew that His
help was near at all times.
Given this, those believers who struggle toimitate their beautiful
character should take them as models of how to be hopeful. Their
resulting behavior, responses, and decisions will be healthy ones, and
thus will influence the people around them, who then will try to show
the same attitude.
Throughout history, many prophets were oppressed by their peoples'
leading unbelievers and prevented from advocating the good character
that Allah wills. The unbelievers preparedall manner of plots in
linewith their goals, and slandered and persecuted the prophets.
However, the prophets met this great oppression with patience,
trusting in Allah, and knowing that He is always with them. Thus they
never despaired, and resumed their struggle with even greater
enthusiasm and resolve. Their determination caused good character
spread among their people and made the unbelievers' efforts come to
naught.
On the following pages are some examples from the Qur'an of their lives.
Prophet Musa (as)
One prophet whom the unbelievers tried to undermine was Musa (as).
While his people were struck with fear anddriven to despair by
theirenemies, he never became hopeless or forgot that Allah would be
with them. In response to his sincerity and submission, Allah helped
them with a greatmiracle: He parted the sea in order to make a path
for them.
And when the two hosts came into sight of one another, Musa's
companions said: "We will surely be overtaken!"He said: "Never! My
Lord is with me, and He will guide me." So We revealed to Musa:
"Strike the sea with your staff" and it split in two, each part like a
towering cliff. (Surat ash-Shu'ara, 61-63)
Prophet Ayyub (as)
Even though he was afflicted with a serious disease, Ayyub (as) showed
no sign of sorrow or hopelessness. Rather, he turned to Allahwith a
deep attachment and asked to be cured. He saw a benefit in his
sickness and thus was patient. His excellent example of hopeful
patience is expounded inthe Qur'an, as follows:
Remember Our servant Ayyub, when he called upon his Lord: "Satan
hasafflicted me with exhaustion and suffering." [So he was told],
"Stamp your foot! Here is a cool bath and water to drink." We gave him
back his family and the same again with them as a mercy from Us, and a
reminder for people of intellect. [We said] "Take a bundle of rushes
in your hand and strike with that, but do not break your oath." We
found him steadfast. What an excellent servant! He truly turned to his
Lord. (Surah Sad, 41-44)
We responded to him and removed from him the harm that was afflicting
him. We restored his family to him, and the same again with them, as a
mercy direct from Us and a reminder to all worshippers. (Surat
al-Anbiya, 84)
Prophet Ya'qub (as)
Ya'qub (as), the father of Yusuf (as), is praised and used as an
example because of his beautiful character and devotion. In response
to the deceptive plan that his other sons devised against Yusuf (as),
he didnot lose hope in Allah but rather turned to Him in complete
sincerity andasked for Yusuf (as) to be returned:
He said: "I complain about my grief and sorrow to Allah alone, because
I know things from Allah that you do not know. My sons, seek news of
Yusuf and his brother, and do not despair of solace from Allah. No one
despairs of solace from Allah except for people who do not believe."
(Surah Yusuf, 86-87)
Prophet Ibrahim (as)
Throughout history, all ofAllah's prophets and messengers
commandedpeople not to lose hope in His mercy. The messengers who came
togive the good news to Ibrahim (as) that his wifewould bear a child
displayed the same attitude:
They said: "We bring you good news of the truth, so do not be among
those who despair."(Surat al-Hijr, 55)
Allah praises Ibrahim (as)in the Qur'an. However, his people failed to
appreciate and recognizehis sincerity and truthfulness. They even
tried to burn him alive. His attachment to Allah in the face of all
these events has always made him a great example for Muslims.
Despite the rejection of his people, Ibrahim (as) showed a great
devotionto Allah by never losing faith in Him, and by relying on His
mercy and submitting to his destiny. By making the fire cool, Allah
allowed no harm or pain to touch him.
